At Apexx Family Dental Care in Littleton, CO, we use only the finest materials in creating custom dental crowns for both cosmetic and restorative purposes. A dental crown is a permanent covering that fits over the original tooth. Natural-looking, tooth-colored dental crowns are used to restore teeth that are damaged or significantly decayed. Dental crowns also can be used for purely aesthetic reasons, for example, to change the shape, realign existing teeth, and whiten a tooth.
Dental crowns can be made of many materials including porcelain, gold and other metals, and acrylic resin. Porcelain crowns are most common as they typically have the most realistic appearance. Whatever the situation, Dr. Richard Nichols has the experience and knowledge to produce dental crowns with superior results and provide each patient with a healthy smile.
Preparing the Tooth and Dental Crown
During your first visit to our Littleton, CO dental clinic, Dr. Richard Nichols will prepare the tooth to be crowned by removing any decay in or around it and then sculpting the tooth so the dental crown fits easily.
An impression of your teeth is then taken and sent to the dental lab where permanent, custom-made dental crowns are created (this usually takes one to two weeks). During this interim period, a temporary dental crown made of an acrylic resin is fitted onto the teeth.
On your next visit, Dr. Richard Nichols will remove the temporary dental crown and fit the permanent dental crown onto the tooth. In this process, he will first make sure the crown has the proper look and fit and then cement the crown into place.
Maintaining Your New Dental Crown
Treat your new dental crown as you would take care of your natural teeth, with daily brushing and flossing to help keep the teeth, gums, and dental crowns free from the bacteria that can cause gum disease. Chewing on hard foods such as ice or pistachios should be avoided because, over time, they can cause dental crowns to crack or break. Given proper oral hygiene, dental crowns can last several decades and may last a lifetime.
